Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrated solution of platelets that may facilitate healing when injected into an area of injured or damaged tissue.
Platelets are small particles in your blood that are best-known for their role in forming clots. However, platelets also carry hundreds of proteins called growth factors, which are an important part of your body’s healing process.
PRP contains a higher concentration of platelets, and therefore a higher concentration of growth factors than normal blood. PRP can be 5-10 times richer in growth factors than typical blood.
A small amount of blood is drawn from your vein into a sterile tube. The tube is placed into a centrifuge and spun so that the plasma and platelets are separated. The plasma and concentrated platelets are then removed from the tube and a PRP injection is made into areas of your skin that need treatment.
PRP treatments typically take 45-60 Minutes.
After PRP treatment, many people can return to regular activities the same day. Willow Bend Medical provides aftercare instructions and reviews what you can expect from recovery depending on your specific procedure and condition.
Improvement of skin texture and tone are noticeable within 3 weeks. Full collagen regeneration takes up to 3 months. Mild swelling may be seen immediately. Over the days and weeks, the platelets will release growth factors and pre-stem cells which will assist in more collagen growth.
Responses to treatment vary, and the frequency and number of treatments will be determined by your provider. The results can last up to 18 months. There is no limit to the number of treatments you can have for skin rejuvenation and maintaining youth but touch-up treatments will maintain the results.
Minimal swelling, bruising and redness can occur for 12-24 hours. Mild bruising can occur at the needle site which may be visible for 2-3 days.
